Volume 7 of the ultra limited cult Secret Mixes Fixes series is the second release of the newest Secret Mixer Fixer, Gay Marvine. The Circa 1979 EP finds Mr. Marvine exploring some of the hottest soulful material from c.1979 through a uniquely Detroit DJ perspective. Finally this part of our cultural history can be written - how the DJs see the records they play, what the most motivating facets of those songs are to them.

Gay Marvine's years of experience in the most underground of night clubs and the seediest of continental bath houses makes him the most qualified editor / rearranger to give the songs that focus, and, um, thrust. On the chopping block today is nothing obscure, these are well known gems, but recrafted from that special "Ken Collier vs D Wynn" dub perspective for maximum effectiveness on today's dance floor.

We find Prince's 1980 political anthem recontextualized into pure hard funk disco dub hedonism - "Party Up!" Herb Albert always had a knack for finding the best session musicians, problem is you have to listen to his muzak informed proto Kenny G soft porn brass whinings. Gay Marvine handles the business, cutting all that mess out, upping the tempo about 25 beats per minute, and turning out a bass driven dance floor monster George Clinton would be envious of and that reminds us why we loved those jacking house piano chords in the first place. Hypnotized indeed!

The B Side features 2 sides of someone we like to call Black Michael. First up is the classic "Don't Stop Til you Get Enough" excerpted, layered and transformed into something far more resembling an abstract of the peak moment of a hot party than any pop disco anthem. If I didn't write this here you would never guess that the no wave disco anthem that closes this EP is actually the song preceding "Shake Your Body Down to the Ground" on the Jackson's 1978 Destiny album.

With intricate and subtle movements, Gay Marvine breathes a whole new life and context into timeless music, c.1979.
